My mother-in-law was taken to the ER today w/ bleeding from the rectum and w/bowel movements, weight loss, loss of energy and left upper quandrant pain. Her CT showed a "irregularity" of the colon and something on her spleen a possible growth. Irregularity?? Any ideas? Her father passed from colon cancer. Anyone with knowledge of the connection between the colon and spleen. I'm fearing cancer. Anyone with knowledge of colon cancer? If so, could it also effect the spleen? I welcome all responses. Just need some kind of answer before tomorrow. Thank you all.

An irregularity only means that they are not seeing the structures they would normally expect. So there is something that does not belong, but it's unknown what the nature of the growth is. The next step will probably be more scans, possibly an MRI since the CT was inconclusive, and a biopsy where they use a needle to retrieve cells from the affected area.

A referral to an oncologist should be next with her history. They are the experts in abnormal cell growth and can determine if it's cancer, and if so what needs to be done for treatment.

If it proves to be colon cancer,They will probably offer her surgery, chemo+radiation.Sometimes radiation +chemo is done first to shrink the tumor and then surgery is performed to remove any residual disease. As for the spleen irregularity, the syptoms you describe do not fit a spleen cancer.Usually the pain is right sided although weight loss, and loss of energy can be symptoms fpr both. The symptom that stick out in my mind is the bleeding. My guess is she will need a colonoscopy with biopsy to determine what your dealing with as well as further evaluation of the spleen.

Yeah, since you're wearing a nurse's hat, I guess you must have gotten the results from the lab. Why were you having a CT scan in the first place? I guess I'd start with basics and wonder if you have an infection somewhere. But your own doctor can give you more information than some LPN on the Internet who likes to pretend she knows something ;o).

Not sure about connection with the two organs. Chinese traditional medicine looks at connections between the organs.

For healing naturally look at things like Reiki, Quantum Touch, look deeply into diet & link between emotions & disease. Colour healing. I have problems with food absorption. I know my spleen & liver arn't working very well & this taxes the other organs. Diet is best place to start along with Energy healing. Doctors know nothing about this stuff unless they have leanings towards alternative medince - so don't ask em unless you want to be laughed at.

Good advice is like gold!

without knowing her full medical history, there is no way to diagnose. she needs to follow the ER doctor's instructions. if she has further questions before her follow up appointment, she can call the ER and speak to the charge nurse.
